There have been mutterings of a large super 35mm format Alexa mini for some time. Actually there have also been whispers of a Full Frame Mini, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer for that wish. However the Alexa Mini LF is going to make a lot of people very happy.

It’s compact size and low weight have made the Alexa Mini a firm favourite, utilising the the ALEV 3 A2X sensor (which has the same photosite size and type as the Super 35 ARRI digital cameras), is only going to extend that appeal, in this new package we get:

  • Large-format ALEXA LF sensor in an ALEXA Mini body
  • New, cost-efficient Codex Compact Drive for fast and open workflows
  • New MVF-2 high-contrast HD viewfinder
  • Internal motorized FSND filters, extra connectors, and user buttons
  • Best overall image quality with much higher usable sensitivity

One of the downsides is that the maximum frame rates are not the same as the Alexa LF, some compromises have to be made to achieve the smaller footprint of the Mini. However the sheer practicality offered by this camera when a small package is required outweighs those issues.

All of the specs can be found here on the ARRI website.
